CHEMOPORT

CHEMOPORT

A Chemotherapy Port (CHEMOPORT) is a small medical device implanted under the skin that provides easy, long-term access to veins for patients receiving repeated chemotherapy.

Why CHEMOPORT is used:

  • Prevents repeated needle pricks during chemotherapy cycles
  • Reduces risk of vein damage and infection from frequent cannula insertion
  • Makes giving chemotherapy safer and more comfortable
  • Allows fast administration of drugs, fluids or blood products

Procedure:

  • Usually placed under local anesthesia
  • Takes around 20–30 minutes
  • A small incision is made on chest or arm to insert the port
  • Port is connected internally to a central vein

Aftercare:

  • Port can stay for months to years depending on treatment
  • Needs flushing every 4–6 weeks if not in use
  • Normal daily activities can be resumed quickly

Advantages:

  • Less painful chemotherapy experience
  • Lower infection rate compared to external lines
  • Long-lasting and reliable access

If you are undergoing long-term chemotherapy, a CHEMOPORT can significantly improve comfort and safety. Discuss with your cancer specialist to know if it is suitable for you.
